When a tooth is missing, it can cause a chain reaction of problems. Surrounding teeth may shift, causing stress to your jaw joint (TMJ) when you chew. It is also much harder to clean teeth that have shifted, so harmful tartar can build up, which can cause cavities and gum disease. At Sninski & Schmitt Family Dentistry in Holly Springs, we understand how much of a problem this is. We also understand that our patients always want to have the best smile possible, and that is why we offer Dental Bridges in Holly Springs. A bridge is one way to replace that missing tooth and regain proper function. A bridge uses teeth on either side of the space as support. A bridge can be made out of the same materials as a crown and will be determined by the patient and Dr. Sninski and Schmitt Family Dentistry at the first appointment. Compared to Holly Springs dental implants, dental bridges are better when the teeth next to the missing tooth might also need caps or have previously-existing dental work. Bridges in Holly Springs are also better if multiple teeth need to be replaced, as a single bridge can replace multiple teeth.

Dental Bridges Process

The initial process for a dental bridge is very similar to a dental crown. Just like a crown, the teeth are prepared and an impression is taken. Once this impression is taken, it will be sent to the lab, where it will use the impression to fabricate the bridge. The bridge is all one piece and consists of the crowns that fit on the adjacent teeth and the fake tooth filling the space.

There are three different types of dental bridges in Holly Springs, and they all serve different purposes depending on your particular needs and desires:

  • Regular or Traditional Dental Bridges: These are your regular bridges. They are mounted on the abutment teeth, the two teeth on either side of the fake tooth. This new fake tooth is called the pontic and can be made from a number of materials, including gold and porcelain. These are the most common types of dental bridges and will be the ones more often recommended by our Holly Springs Dentist.
  • Cantilever Bridges: Cantilever Bridges are Holly Springs dental bridges in which the fake tooth is mounted to only one real tooth. These are no longer very common as they are not very stable, but you will still occasionally encounter them. We will almost never recommend these Holly Springs dental bridges unless there is no alternative.
  • Maryland Bridges: Maryland bridges are very similar to regular Holly Springs dental bridges, but while regular bridges are bonded to the tops of the adjacent teeth, Maryland bridges are bonded almost wholly to the back of the teeth. While they have a more natural look, they are also more expensive than regular bridges in Holly Springs.
